Instead, use Oxalic Acid to safely remove tough surface stains without bleaching the wood. Oxalic acid is an all-natural, organic compound found in common vegetables like spinach and rhubarb.
To use, dissolve 2 tablespoons in a quart of hot tap water. Use an artist brush and paint in the mixture on the stained area. The first coat will lighten the stain. If it doesn’t disappear, let the coat dry and repeat. It may take several coats. Once the stains are gone you need to neutralize the acid with borax (another natural product) so it will not react with your wood finish. Use two tablespoons of borax in a quart of hot water. Saturate a rag with the borax solution and wipe the surface and allow to dry. Proceed with wood finishing.
