The whole point of mortising is to whack a chisel as deep as you can in the wood and then pry out the chips. Regular bench chisels aren’t designed to do this efficiently; they are thin and will break. Mortise chisels are built strong to take a lot of punishment.

Two Cherries mortise chisels are patterned after sash mortise chisels but are a lot heavier and have heavy round hornbeam handles and a leather disc shock absorber. The high quality carbon steel is hardened to 61 degrees Rockwell for strength, durability and superior edge retention. Overall length is about 13″ – 14″. The substantive round wooden handle is made of Hornbean. Made in Germany. Inch sizes are approximate.
